Many of you have been asking about the Language reactor chrome extension we have mentioned in our List of Cantonese Resources Blog Post. So we have decided to make a quick tutorial video to show you how to use it for your Chinese learning journey.
First, you will have to add the extension to your chrome desktop application. So we will go to google and search for “Language Reactor Chrome Extension”. Then click on “add the extension” when you arrive at the download page and you will have it successfully added to your chrome browser.
Once you add the extension, you can see it under the small tab that’s shaped like a puzzle piece on the upper right of your server. You can toggle the extension on or off depending on when you want to use it. You can also click “turn on sync” to allow for all synced devices to also have the extension available.
When you click on the extension icon, it will bring you to the site where you can find different resources to use with the extension. Clicking on the tabs on the left side of the page, you can find different videos and channels recommended to you to help you study your selected language. You can play around with this yourself. There are both YouTube and Netflix resources recommended.
If you head over to YouTube, you can see a blue CC symbol showing up next to certain videos. These are the only videos that can work with the extension. For example, we click to watch this clip of Modern Family. We can see the language reactor icon at the bottom for us to toggle on and off and the settings icon on the side. There is also a full transcript of the video on the side.
When the extension is toggled on, the video will now show two lines of english subtitles. If you want to watch it with Chinese subtitles to practice your reading, you can click on settings at the bottom of the video. The settings show both the YouTube subtitle language and translation language. We simply change the translation language to whatever language we want. For Inspirlang, we will want a line of Chinese (simplified) subtitle and when you close settings, you can see there is the second line of Chinese subtitle we want. Also when you point at the transcription lines, another line of Chinese transcript will appear beside it.
This is great for practicing your reading comprehension. You can also practice your listening skills and vocabulary by watching Chinese dramas and activating English subtitles. This is a great tool to practice the language you are learning while watching something you find entertaining. In our next blog, we will be providing a list of dramas we recommend that you can watch on YouTube or Netflix with the language reactor chrome extension. We love discovering and sharing fun ways to learn a language. The best way to learn is the fun way to learn.
